Following up with Rachael Lucas

If you would like a paid sub but can’t afford one, email me and I’ll sort you out.
Rachael Lucas’s original interview is one of my most popular posts. Read it and then read Rachael’s follow up below.
Rachael:
What’s changed? Reading back on the original interview which was not even eighteen months ago I realise that everything has, and nothing has. Back then I wrote:
“I’ve worked out that I don’t actually need very much in life at all - I could quite happily live in my van - so I’m looking forward to a small, quiet, low-maintenance sort of life.”
Yesterday we headed back up the M6 in our van, talking about making a few modifications to make it practical for really cold winter trips… we’re contemplating taking it to the mountains in January so we need somewhere to dry wet stuff. So what hasn’t changed is that we are quite happy living a very minimal, low-possessions sort of life and the van contains everything we need.
What has changed is that we’ve bought an old farmhouse with land in France - outright - and now we spend as much time as we can over there working on renovation (I own a cement mixer! This makes me very happy).
Financially speaking, I think it’s interesting to look at what has changed… self publishing has meant that I have the freedom to make money if I want to (to buy a house) but also to take six months off from writing.
