I somehow missed following up on this, one of the earliest interviews I did for The Ladybird Purse back in December 2021.
You can read Heather’s original interview first here before finding out what’s changed in the last three years:
What’s changed?
I am pretty much retired from paid work now and was able to claim my state pension in 2023.
I earn a small amount of money by being a theatrical landlady which I’ve done since we bought this house 10 years ago. We live very close to a theatre and use a website called Theatre Digs where the room is advertised. I worked as a funeral celebrant for a couple of years and will still do a funeral for someone I know but I don‘t market myself anymore.
For theatre digs our guest pays £28 per night to the agency and for this they get a double room with en-suite bathroom and use of our kitchen. I don‘t generally do breakfasts for anyone but they can help themselves to anything in the fridge. Mostly they bring their own stuff.
Theatre Digs takes 10% commission and we get £25.20 per night. It‘s not a get rich quick scheme and we do it for pleasure and to use the room plus we‘ve met some great people and often get comp tickets. For funerals I charge between £200 and £250.
